The number of Rohingya refugees fleeing a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar has now topped 400,000, a crisis the United Nations human rights chief called “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing”. On September 13th UN Secretary General António Guterres said that the crisis involving the Rohingya in Myanmar’s Rakhine state had become “catastrophic”.
Many of those escaping the violence to neighbouring Bangladesh are from the Rohingya, an ethnic minority of around 1.1 million Muslims. The Refugees in Bangladesh urgently need water, food, medicine, sanitation and shelter.
Access for aid agencies is limited but Zam Zam Charitable Trust is on the ground in Cox’s Bazar providing emergency help to thousands.
We now need your help more than ever before. Donate now to our Emergency Appeal to help those who have lost everything. Your generous donation will help us deliver:
- Clean water and emergency food
- Life-saving medicine and medical treatment
Balham Mosque & Tooting Islamic Centre are working with Zam Zam Charitable Trust to raise awareness in the local community about the plight of the Rohingya Community.
Sister Hassanah, a volunteer at Balham Mosque & Tooting Islamic Centre (and Daughter of our Chairman, Abdul Khaleq Amejee), was in the area during mid September 2017 and took 500 Food Packs from the local community – thousands of people turned up! Some people in the queue had not eaten for 14 days and many were surviving on leaves. The United Nations estimates 400,000 people have been impacted in the region but people on the ground estimate this number to be nearly double this figure, of which 60% are women and children.
Your donations are most needed at this time of need for the people of Rohingya.
